Nihi Sumba, Sumba Island Indonesia
Those travellers who want to surrender themselves to off-script travel experiences with purpose in destinations on the edge of wildness.
The Low Down
Nihi Sumba is an intimate island resort where an ancient tribal culture uniquely forms the backdrop for an experience of unregulated freedom, understated luxury and unforgettable memories. The team can tailor your stay, orchestrating everything from surfing and fishing, to visiting ancient monolithic sites in traditional villages. They also recommend a picnic under the mist of a waterfall or relaxing under the palm trees at the award-winning Nihioka Spa. A hotel with an interesting upbringing, Nihi Sumba was brought to life by surf enthusiast Claude and his wife Petra Graves, who discovered the island’s epic waves back in the eighties. Starting as a simple shack, the property was bought by Chris Burch and James McBride who developed it into a series of private villas. Nowadays, the high-end collection of villas reflects local Sumbanese culture and architecture, merging grass-thatched menara roofs, teak wood, local artwork and a beach-chic mentality.
