EPIC FOR ALL AGES

For when your family is a mix of ages or you’re just looking for a destination that ticks all the boxes…these hotels and resorts know a thing or two about family-friendly travel

the Low Down

Uninterrupted ocean views create a unique castaway experience at Soneva Jani. The beautifully designed villas offer the ultimate privacy and laid-back luxury – possibly some of the best villas we have ever seen! Soneva Jani offers Water Retreats, Water Reserves and Island Reserves, most with their very own private slides, kitchens, living rooms and huge private pool. In spite of the island’s size, much of the resort has been built over the water. At the centre sits The Gathering, a huge, open-air, three-story structure that houses the resort’s restaurants, fitness centre, spa and kids’ club. On top of that, there are multiple other dining experiences scattered over the water and around the island, Cinema Paradiso plus an abundance of aqua adventures to be had. Made of sustainable materials, Soneva Jani is natural, yet refined and sophisticated – a truly unique experience!

Soneva Jani has a selection of destination dining experiences that will leave you spoilt for choice. The Crab Shack has a delicious selection of wines to go with the fresh seafood as well as an upstairs deck to watch sunsets from or book into Guess Who’s Cooking and dine on a secret menu, prepared by one of the chefs, in a secret, ever-changing location and menu. From the mind of acclaimed Swedish chef Mathias Dahlgren, Overseas plays an ode to organic produce and the sea. Dine on pescatarian, vegetarian, and plant-based single plates, sharing plates, and signature dishes for lunch and dinner. Alternatively, dine on a health-conscious plant-based menu designed by the innovative raw food chef Diana Von Cranach at So Wild, showcasing unique and simple dishes that revive historical, nearly-forgotten traditional recipes from the Indonesian Spice Islands and South East Asia. The main restaurant, Down To Earth, is where you will begin your day with fresh fruits, juices and breakfast staples. The day continues with a buffet of organic salads, live cooking stations, the wood-fired pizza oven, tandoors and grills. Sunset aperitifs lead into the evening menus where chefs take the stage in the open kitchen. There’s also a range of destination dining options as well as special evenings including Full Moons and North Beach dinners.

The Maldives are a year-round destination with a near constant temperature of 86°F (30°C). The water temperature remains steady, never falling below 77°F (25°C) and reaching 84°F (29°C) during high season. However, the islands are tropical and therefore also subject to two distinct seasons, or monsoons. April is a transitional time between these two seasons and is known for the clear water, which is appealing to divers. The iruvai (northeast monsoon) is hot and dry and runs from December to April, making this the official high season when the islands enjoy little rain and low humidity. Rain is more likely from May to November (during hulghangu, or southwest monsoon), making this the official low season.

COVID guidelines: The Soneva group has strict Covid-19 precautions. Each resort has a PCR machine to test everyone on arrival. No later than 24 hours before flying you must submit this health-declaration form and provide a certificate for a negative test result from a test taken up to 96 hours before arrival, and you’ll need to fill in an Immigration Arrival Card. If you have symptoms on arrival, you’ll be isolated and tested. All passengers will be screened on, and the Airport Host greeting you will wear a mask and gloves; you’ll need to wear a mask too. Vehicles used for airport transfers will have their windows down and be sanitised. You’ll be met by your (masked) Barefoot Butler at the jetty; please keep your masks on until at your villa, which will have been sanitised. Guest luggage will be sanitised before it’s delivered. At your villa you’ll be tested again and you must wait indoors for 24 hours until results are ready. In the meantime, guests will get a credit towards food, drink and experiences (can be used for in-villa dining). If your test is negative you can use the whole resort. If it’s positive you’ll need to isolate for 14 days. In this case, Soneva will waive the fee for the room for 14 days (charges will be for incidentals) and guests can use their villa, surrounding gardens and adjacent beach. Housekeeping and room service will be available in line with safety protocols. After 14 days or 10 days after first symptoms, you can use the resort. Guests must have their temperature taken daily by their butler, and another PCR test if staying more than five days. Cleaning measures have been increased (with a focus on door handles and produce brought into the island), hand-sanitiser is available throughout, and some changes have been made: pastry chefs will man the chocolate room and the breakfast buffet will be table service.
