The Secrets of Song Saa

Updated: Apr 14

A haven of sustainable luxury nestled in the undiscovered beauty of Cambodia’s Koh Rong Archipelago; Song Saa Private Island is a pioneer of ethical extravagance spread over a pair of pristine isles. With unique cuisine and stunning sunset views of the Gulf of Thailand combined with an array of spell-binding spa and wellness treatments, Song Saa offers the ultimate indulgence for mind, body and soul. Best of all, their commitment to environmental and community programs means you’ll be treading lightly on this special piece of paradise - being eco-friendly has never been so glamorous!

In the warm emerald waters of the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia’s islands nestle like dazzling natural jewels. Song Saa Private Island lies secluded in this magnificent seascape, just 29 km or 45 minutes by speedboat from the port of Sihanoukville. Most of the islands remain undeveloped – deserted oases of virgin rainforests, tropical reefs and glistening white beaches. There are only two complimentary boat transfers per day, so it's best to speak with the hotel first to get the timings right before booking your car or flight. High-flyers can pay for a private speedboat or helicopter transfer if they prefer to get their quicker.

Offering the only all pool, over-water villa private island in the region, Song Saa, by its very definition, dedicates itself not only to be the ultimate luxury holiday destination, but to also preserve and protect the surrounding Koh Rong Archipelago. With harmony, sustainability and barefoot luxury underpinning the design of Song Saa, expect energy-efficient thatched roofing, sandstone reclaimed from the Villa foundation, recycled timber from disused fishing boats, furniture made from driftwood collected from local beaches and coves, and floors made from timber salvaged from old factories, warehouses and demolition yards around Cambodia and Thailand. This is complemented by bespoke hand-crafted furniture made by local artisans and artwork sourced from provincial markets or local artists. Featuring 24 villas, highlights include eco-friendly amenities, all built from recycled materials. Each villa features an idyllic private infinity pool and shaded sundeck with a plush canopy daybed. The villas are also fitted with outdoor showers, a linen-draped canopy bed and an L-shaped sofa to take in the breath-taking view around the island, perfect for lazy days.

Luxurious villas aside, what makes Song Saa Private Island a truly indulgent romantic getaway is the level of service provided by its staff. Song Saa staff are almost entirely made up of ever-smiling locals who are dying to share the land’s rich and diverse culture. Despite its remote location, Song Saa has no end of unforgettable experiences, from morning snorkels in search of seahorses, to afternoon kayaking through mangroves with the resident marine biologist, all of which can be organised by your villa host. The team can also organise an exploration of the beautiful Koh Rong Archipelago via a romantic sunset cruise on a traditional Cambodian fishing boat. The adventure on Song Saa Private Island doesn’t end there, with resort staff also ready to prepare diving gear for the curious couples to explore the marine environment around the island.

The islands gastronomic offering is equally as outstanding as its location. Offering global cuisine with locally sourced ingredients across the resort’s two food and beverage outlets – Vista Bar & Restaurant and Driftwood bar – there is ample to choose from thanks to the daily specials and ever-changing seasonal menus. There is also the option to take up their destination dining experience, freely selecting any one of the breath-taking locations on the island for their meal.

The icing atop the beautiful cake is the Song Saa Private Island Spa, made up of little ‘sanctuaries’ dotted across the island resort. The wellness journey integrated within the scenic natural environment of the Koh Rong Archipelago features an outdoor spa sanctuary area and Sushumna, that overlooks Koh Bong Island and the ocean.

The spa’s foundation is steeped deep in the Buddhist tradition of ‘Metta Bhavana’, or loving kindness and Song Saa Sanctuaries uses sustainable and natural products from artisanal brands, including ‘ILa beauty, a UK brand. At Song Saa, the concierges are tasked with offering you the utmost comfort and will greet you in person to fully understand your needs and preferences before recommending a treatment. Fancy a spa session under the stars? Night-time spa sessions for two – soothing relaxation rituals – can be arranged with a day’s notice.

The best part? All you’ll need is sarongs, swimwear and your snorkel kit. And don’t worry, if you forgot to pack your favourite kaftan, you can always shop at the island's two exclusive boutiques.
